Granulating Holbein watercolors

Holbein's catalog marks 23 colors in Holbein Artists' Watercolor as granulating. Here they are by color.

What granulation looks like

In a granulating wash the pigment particles settle into the dips of the paper and leave a speckled, grainy texture instead of a flat tint. Painters use it for skies, stone, sand and other textures. It usually shows most on cold-pressed or rough paper with plenty of water, and less on smooth hot-pressed paper.
